QUEER MOVEMENTS ON FILM: Tongues Untied (1989) + Global Shorts

Date
Mon 23.09.19
Timings
1pm – 2:30pm

Lyrical, erotic and fiercely self-possessed Marlon Riggs’s seminal 1989 film essay at once captures the specifics of the gay black experience and crafts an identity, rich and radical, for a community struggling against the combined forces of racism, homophobia and the AIDS crisis. Dance, personal confession, performance, protest documentary and crucially poetry especially that of writer and activist Essex Hemphill are all recruited to transformative effect. This 30th anniversary screening also marks 25 years since Riggs untimely death and will be followed by a selection of shorts from the periphery of cinematic culture which highlight marginalised queer subjectivities.
