Social spaces and the public sphere undergird our movements, providing the places of encounter in which politics can occur.
To rebuild associational life, we need spaces to meet, socialise, strengthen our networks and visibilise our politics. Our movement has been shaped by a rich history of social centres, working men’s clubs, community halls and democratic public infrastructure - yet many of these spaces have been lost, with catastrophic results.
This session will explore contemporary initiatives to rebuild these spaces and recreate the democratic public sphere, ahead of a practical workshop with Unit 38 on how we can launch projects in our own towns and cities.
Ben is a founding member of Unit 38, an architecture practice focused on supporting social movements, and a Director of Pelican House - a social centre in London. Ben is on the Festival Organising Committee for TWT25.
