Caryl Churchill’s 1976 play, Light Shining in Buckinghamshire, dramatises the Putney Debates, the pivotal climax of the English Revolution. Following the victory of Parliamentary forces in the Civil War, and abolition of the monarchy, the pragmatists of the New Model Army clashed with the radical idealists the Diggers, the Ranters and the Levellers, over the nature of the political settlement that would emerge.
