Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Micere Mugo’s 1976 play, The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, is a revolutionary classic. Set during the years of British colonialism in Kenya, the play dramatises the life and struggle of Mau Mau field marshal, Dedan Kimathi, who led an armed rebellion against the brutalities of British rule, was captured in 1956 and executed a year later. Ngugi, who died earlier this year, was a titan of African and world literature. His work exposed the brutalities of colonial occupation and the right of colonised people to resist.
