One of Ghassan Kanafani’s most important works, his novella Returning to Haifa explores loss, memory, and what identity really means beyond what one is born into.
In the aftermath of the Naksa of 1967. Palestinian couple Said and Safiyya return to Haifa to visit the home they were forced to leave in 1948. There, they meet the Israeli couple who have since settled into their stolen home and discover a shocking secret about the son they were forced to leave behind when feeling in 1948. Through this interaction, the story explores the harsh reality of return and shatters romanticised yearnings for the past.
The novella has been adapted for the stage by Ismail Khalidi and Naomi Wallace.
