The highest concentration of Irish speakers live in areas called ‘Gaeltacht’ regions – (Irish for Irish-speaking area). Because Gaeltacht regions are mostly reliant on the tourism industry for economic viability, they are not only riddled with Air BnBs and short-term lets, but planning laws exacerbate the lack of supply, by restricting the building of houses so as to conserve the natural beauty and heritage of these areas. This creates housing insecurity and fosters gentrification (often by the English-speaking socially mobile). Then add an extra level of marginalisation through the chronic neglect of language rights. What do you get? A community organising to fight back.
