Students Transformed at TWT25

Students Transformed, a fringe of The World Transformed, will bring together the student movement from across the country to share our stories, campaigns, and projects that are aimed at building a better world.

Over the past few years, the student movement has seen huge mobilisations: rent strikes, encampments for Palestine, campaigns for disability justice, and frequent marches against gender-based violence in our cities. However, these mobilisations remain separated from each other, and rarely affect the real change that we need.

Our universities remain committed to partnerships with the arms trade, education is still marketised, staff are underpaid and overworked, students are working part-time if not full-time, foodbanks and hardship fund usage is increasing, and tuition fees and rents keep going up. Through developing a collective critical analysis of the world around us - its power structures, systems of oppression, and the ways in which we have been failed - and building accountable democratic structures that challenge unanalysed assumptions of what is possible, we can begin to organise a large-scale student movement that fights, and wins.

Our generation was born into a world of promises that remain underdelivered. Decades of austerity and neoliberalism have raided our communities, destroyed our safety nets, and replaced solidarity with rugged individualism. Moderation, compromise and calls for neutrality - though they can be well intentioned - have seen us turn away from the tools required for us to build collective power and improve our own conditions. It has left us with Students’ Unions, in many cases, led by the students in name only, and crackdowns on the political expressions of democratically elected radical representatives. But it does not have to be this way.

Join us at the University of Manchester Students’ Union, 10th–12th October, for a radical programme of events that seeks to put the student movement on a new path; a path towards a truly better world.

Events for TWT25 will be taking place in and around Hulme, Manchester - the programme for Students Transformed will take place in the UoM SU building.
